How do Students Opt-Out?

  • Farmingdale State College uses Merit to highlight student achievements both in and out of the classroom.  Achievements can range from scholarships, Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence, published research findings, leadership in a club or activities which support the community.

How does it work?

  • Academic and student support departments and campus organizations wishing to publish an achievement badge are invited to contact the Farmingdale State College Office for Institutional Advancement at 631-420-2400.  Not only will students receive a badge and personalized story, but the announcements of these achievements will be sent to student’s hometown newspaper for inclusion.  Better still, students can forward the announcements to family members and prospective employers.

What is a badge?

  • A badge is awarded to each published Merit achievement.  The badge will appear on the student’s personal Merit page. Badges represent an institutionally verified academic achievement or scholarly activity.  Badges visually showcase a student's accomplishment and can easily be shared with friends and family through the social media sharing icons on their personal Merit.

Why is Merit important for students?

  • Merit provides valuable information to people who make decisions about internships, grad school, and jobs through highlighting each student's achievements.
  • A Merit page creates a positive online identity for post-graduation success. Many companies now research applicants online, and some have rejected applicants based on what they found there. A student's Merit page is a way for them to shine online.
  • Featured students are informed of the announcement through their college e-mail address and encouraged to share their accomplishments with family and friends through social media channels such as Facebook. This reinforces positive accomplishments and reflects positively on the institution as a whole.

How does Merit enhance the FSC Experience?

  • Merit pages show how Farmingdale State College prepares students for careers while making them valuable members of society who are more attractive to employers. The profiles connect what students do in the classroom to the exceptional career-building opportunities students gain while on campus.
